Chris Lin and Ben Brandt

november eighth through december nineteenth 2008

opening reception: saturday, november eighth - six p.m.

Sharing an interest in constructed environments and how external architectural systems of organization relate to the invisible structures of our psyches and bodies, Chris Lin and Ben Brandt present work that relies heavily on craftsmanship and material exploration. Lin has built a cardboard and papier mache city loosely based on places he’s been and experiences he’s had in Chicago. Recreating these places using “low art” materials allows him to confront his past by reducing unpleasant memories into something ineffectual and humorous.  In his paintings and mixed media constructions, Brandt investigates the metaphorical connections between his methods of construction and material choices and complex systems in the built and natural world like power grids, radio transmitters and natural waterways.
